And the nature of metabolism is dramatically different in hibernation as compared to sleep (even extended sleep, or heavy sedation). Too many interesting questions, too few good ways to answer them.Sunilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07776658071546232685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8212356.post-38740068435971790662007-10-03T07:40:00.000-07:002007-10-03T07:40:00.000-07:00The real challenge in interpreting any human chara...The real challenge in interpreting any human characteristic as a product of Darwinian evolution is to find the correct set of conditions that might have prompted that response and hard-wired it into the genes. Sleep as a hibernation response to the Ice Age, anyone?! Diabetes incidentally *has* been proposed as a Darwinian response to the Ice Age.Wavefunctionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14993805391653267639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8212356.post-1609978058086167552007-10-02T07:14:00.000-07:002007-10-02T07:14:00.000-07:00anonymous.....sure, that may be right, but it also...anonymous.....sure, that may be right, but it also points out why it is so hard to really study and understand sleep. If you say the hypothesis is that sleep evolved to help animals escape predators, it seems like that would be a hypothesis that is very hard to test. What are your controls for such an experiment? How do you compare species? Can you not argue against that example saying if an animal managed not to sleep, it could spend its time searching for sleeping (and possibly defenseless) prey?

It's all fascinating.Sunilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07776658071546232685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8212356.post-82989931764016994392007-10-01T05:12:00.000-07:002007-10-01T05:12:00.000-07:00Hi SunilSleep could also have evolved to escape fr...Hi Sunil

Sleep could also have evolved to escape from predators (as Leon mentioned) who are specialized for night-life or vice versa. This would not only give a natural survival advantage but also help the animal to search for food without itself getting eaten. All it takes for sleep to evolve is for a animal to shelter away from the sights of its predators who are specialized for either or diurnal or nocturnal hunting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8212356.post-49576842722322263432007-09-28T16:35:00.000-07:002007-09-28T16:35:00.000-07:00leon....I've tried to distinguish sleep itself fro...leon....I've tried to distinguish sleep itself from circadian or other rhythms. Cyanobacteria for instance have circadian systems.
Tjhe evolutionary successful startegy os probably prtolonged sleep - low energy needs; saftey from predatoprs etc. The problem is reproduction - which despite reports from many women to the contrary- does require some semblance of consciousness from the male.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
